How I Actually Spend My Time As a UX Consultant

How I thought I'd spend my time as a consultant

How I actually spend my time as a consultant

Alright, so the panic pieces of the pie are a slight exaggeration. But let’s be clear: freelancing is almost nothing like you expect it will be.

I’ve written before about what to consider before jumping into consulting work, but let me reiterate; most of a consultant's or freelancer’s time is spent securing work and managing the logistics of being in business, not doing project work. And based on my latest informal poll, the holiday season leaves UXers of all sorts scrambling to finish up work before vacations begin, and consultants scrambling to fill end-of-year empty space.

My advice to you, fellow UXers? If you’re overwhelmed with work, consider reaching out to a freelancer who may be free and is looking for more billable time on the books. But if you find yourself with some free time, take a deep breath and enjoy the downtime. Next thing you know, you’ll be scrambling to fit everything in again!
